Artist: Yutaro Yamada - Modern Teapots Utilizing the Characteristics of Tokoname Ware

Born in 1982 in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, a region long known for its teapots. His family business was also pottery. In 2010, he graduated from the Ceramic Arts Department of Tokoname High School. In 2014, he studied architecture at Daido University, moving away from pottery. After a period of employment, he quickly returned to the world of pottery. In 2017, he completed his studies at the Tokoname Tou no Mori Pottery Research Institute. Simultaneously, he established himself as an independent artist specializing in teapots and other tea ceremony utensils, separate from his family business.

Yutaro Yamada's teapots, utilizing the characteristics of Tokoname ware

Yutaro Yamada's teapots are characterized by sophisticated designs that embrace the traditions of Tokoname ware while incorporating a modern sensibility. The moment you pick one up, you'll be surprised by its lightness and precision. The light and thinly crafted teapot offers an astonishingly comfortable fit, and its feel in hand is like an extension of your own.

Yutaro Yamada's teapots exquisitely balance practicality and beauty. The shape of the spout, the placement of the handle, and the pleasant sensation you feel with each use all contribute to the special charm of his work. These are pieces that are beautiful to behold, but whose true appeal is further enhanced when you actually hold them in your hand.

Tokoname ware is known for its red clay and highly transparent glaze. Yutaro Yamada utilizes this Tokoname red clay, cherishing the warmth that emerges from the earth. Using this clay, his teapots convey a warmth that allows you to truly relax when you hold them. The rustic texture of the natural clay and the soft quality visible after firing envelop the user.

Furthermore, Yutaro Yamada has developed his own glazes, maximizing the characteristics of Tokoname ware glazes while incorporating a fresh sensibility. As a result, his teapots possess a captivating luster that draws the eye, and a beautiful texture that seems to make time stand still. The glossy sheen of the glaze allows you to appreciate its beauty with each use.

Light, refined, and beautiful Tokoname ware pieces

Yutaro Yamada's works are crafted to be as light and thin as possible. While this lightness provides ease of use, the meticulously detailed design also offers visual enjoyment. Beautiful from every angle, each piece is like a work of art, drawing you in with its beauty every time you hold it. Furthermore, in addition to ease of pouring and holding, the internal design, carefully crafted to allow tea leaves to expand naturally, provides a pleasant experience for the user. All these elements harmonize within a single piece, demonstrating their true value in everyday use.
