Artist Hirotaka Tobimatsu - Warm spaces and vessels woven by Tobimatsu Toki

Born in Saga Prefecture in 1980, currently residing in Tokyo. Presents works mainly centered on slip-casted porcelain under the brand name "Tobimatsu Toki". Graduated from Tama Art University, Department of Crafts, Ceramics Program. Utilizing his experience in three-dimensional molding with molds during his studies, he began creating "vessels" using slip casting techniques. After working as an assistant for potters Takehiko Higuchi and Matiko Ogawa, among others, he became independent.

Hirotaka Tobimatsu's works are most characterized by their ability to create a warm space woven by light and shadow. The design, which utilizes the translucency of porcelain, has a "retro modern" atmosphere that is both nostalgic and fresh. His diverse works, such as lampshades, "vessels," and vases, embody delicate beauty within simplicity, gently illuminating everyday living spaces. They are also used in the lighting fixtures at the nokaze store, exuding a presence that enhances the entire space.

Simple and modern vessels that maximize the translucency of Tobimatsu Toki's porcelain

Hirotaka Tobimatsu's works are characterized by techniques that maximize the translucency of porcelain. In the slip-casting method used by Hirotaka Tobimatsu, liquid porcelain clay is poured into plaster molds to achieve uniform, smooth shapes and beautiful translucency. To create a delicate texture that allows more light to pass through than ordinary porcelain, a specially adjusted porcelain clay is used.

Lampshades, in particular, are appealing for their design where soft light illuminating in the dark gently envelops the entire space, giving a modern yet somewhat nostalgic impression. Furthermore, plates and bowls combine durability suitable for daily use with simple beauty, and vases are designed to bring natural harmony to plants and the space.

A comfortable time woven by light and shadow

In Hirotaka Tobimatsu's works, a strong commitment to the expression of light can be felt. Hirotaka Tobimatsu states, "Light is not just physical brightness, but something that brings peace of mind to people." True to his words, his works create warmth and rhythm in space through light.

In his lampshades, the angle of light leakage and the softness of the light are meticulously calculated, making them artistic items that go beyond mere lighting fixtures. Additionally, the subtle irregularities and delicate color variations on the surface of the porcelain create a contrast of light and shadow, expressing a beauty as if capturing a scene woven by nature.

Among these, many "vessels" are created using unique techniques. Their simple designs exude delicacy, and they enrich daily life. Moreover, the "vessels" are light and exceptionally user-friendly. Once you use them, you'll find them indispensable.

Hirotaka Tobimatsu's works illuminate daily life and create new value. Experience their charm at the nokaze store and consider incorporating them into your own space.
