Tomokazu Kawasumi's unique retro and antique plate

Tomokazu Kawasumi's "antique/rim plate" is a rimmed plate that is unique to Kawasumi, who strives for retro and antique designs. Tomokazu Kawasumi originally liked retro toys, antique furniture, and items with an aged texture, and named the glaze color "antique" because he wanted to express his own taste and create a material that looked like a different material. This large plate matches both Japanese and Western cuisine.

The rim draws attention to the center of the dish, enhancing the food.

Artist: Tomokazu Kawasumi - Unique works woven from the warmth characteristic of Kasama clay and metallic glazes

Tomokazu Kawasumi was born in Hokota City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 1996 and has been familiar with crafting since childhood. In 2019, he graduated from the Pottery Course, Department of Traditional Crafts, Faculty of Crafts, Kyoto University of Art and Design, where he deepened his skills and knowledge of traditional crafts, further strengthening his passion for pottery.

To further his studies, he completed the Pottery Department at Ibaraki Prefectural Kasama College of Ceramic Art in 2021, and then trained at the prestigious Kasama-yaki kiln, "Otsu Ko Kiln." While inheriting the traditional techniques of Kasama-yaki, he continued to explore his own style.

Then, in 2023, he became independent in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and established his own studio. He creates unique works that combine the warmth characteristic of Kasama clay with metallic glazes.

Currently, he exhibits his works at charity auctions and is a wonderful artist who balances his pottery with social contribution.

Characteristics of Tomokazu Kawasumi's Works

Tomokazu Kawasumi's ceramics are characterized by a unique texture created by the warmth of Kasama clay and metallic glazes. The surface of his works reveals natural patterns created by firing, showing a variety of expressions depending on the viewing angle and light.

When you pick up a "vessel," you'll feel a moist texture and a profound presence. The design, which pursues compatibility with food, transforms the dining table into a special place. Tomokazu Kawasumi's ceramics transcend the realm of mere "vessels" and become companions that resonate with the user's heart.

The unique texture created by the warmth of Kasama clay and metallic glazes

Tomokazu Kawasumi's pottery is filled with multiple layers of dedication. Using Kasama clay as the main material, he combines long-cultivated traditional techniques with unique ingenuity. To maximize the characteristics of this material, he meticulously experiments with glazes and firing methods. In addition, his original metallic glazes create a profound and refined luster despite being pottery. This brilliance adds new charm to the "vessel"'s expression and brings a touch of quality to the dining table.

Tomokazu Kawasumi considers "vessels" to be "supporting actors for food." Therefore, he pays meticulous attention not only to the shape and size but also to the color and texture of the glaze, pursuing designs that naturally harmonize with any dish.
